Advice for booking London trip?

Hi,
Can anyone offer any advice on where to stay in or around London next month? I'm flying into Gatwick and will be in London for 4 days, planning to do some touristy stuff with my partner (zoo, Madame Tussauds, look round some expensive shops we can't afford anything from
)
The Travelodges in the centre all seem to be around £300 for the 4 days. Is there anywhere you'd recommend which is slightly cheaper but still easily accessible (eg by tube)? I saw a few cheaper Hotels out by Heathrow airport but people on tripadvisor said it was 45 mins to travel to central London.
Any advice would be very much appreciated, I'm suffering from information overload looking at all these hotels!

How are you getting into the city? Are you taking Gatwick Express to Victoria?
Here's your options

I can't see any logic to flying into Gatwick then heading for Heathrow. Surely if you wanted an airport hotel, you'd look for one around Gatwick?0 -
You will pay less for hotels outside of London but as you point out you have to balance this with the extra travel costs in both money and time. As long as not near the Easter bank holiday you may find cheap rates at the Travelodge in Clapham which is beside the train station. It would be a 5 min train journey from Clapham Junction train station to Waterloo for the attractions there such as The Eye, Houses of Parliament, Big Ben, Embankment etc. You can change there onto the bakerloo line tube and about 10 minute journey to Baker street for Madam Tussauds. To get to South Kensington for the museums by there it would be a 20 min journey involving one change at West Brompton. As Clapham Junction is a train station if you buy a daily 1-2 zone travelcard from there it will have the British Rail logo on it and so be eligible for the 2for 1 days out train offers (london zoo is on there).

Trains also go direct from Gatwick to Clapham Junction.
You can use www.tfl.gov.uk to plan your journeys in advance and for travel you can either buy a zone1-2 daily travelcard each day (purchase aft 9.30am for better off peak weekday rates) or pay a £5 desposit for an Oyster card per person and then top up as required.
Either way do not book the Gatwick Express as you can get the very slightly slower Southern train for the same journey and it will cost significantly less.

We stopped in a b&b at kings cross before using eurostar , cost less then £50 a night , there are loads round there.
Btw I wouldn't bother with madam tussauds , it's expensive rubbish , London is jam packed with great things to doVuja De - the feeling you'll be here later0 -
First Capital Connect have regular trains running from Gatwick to Kings Cross.
I'd also give Madam Tussauds a swerve but each to their own!0 -

I always think Madam Tussauds is very poor value for money. We have Merlin annual passes and have visted several times. I know we tend to rush around every where but it takes less than an hour to do the whole lot and it is so packed, even when you get there well before opening time. You wait for a photo opportunity and then several people just stroll in ahead of you. We run past the first section now without stopping ahead of the crowds but then they don't open the second section until later so you have to hang around.0 -
There's a great sushi place called Inamo, the food is first class. We’ve had to remove your signature. Please check the Forum Rules if you’re unsure why it’s been removed and, if still unsure, email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0

For hotels in London I always leave the booking to a few days beforehand. Generally I don't really care which hotel I'm in as it's just somewhere to sleep for a few hours so if you aren't fussy about location or hotel name you can get some excellent lastminute deals through sites such as Expedia, Lastminute.com and Laterooms.com
London has hundreds of hotels so there will always be spare capacity that they need to flog off.0
