My wife doesn't pay tax but I hear that there is still a tax gain to be found.....

Yes, you can make a lump sum payment at any time during the tax year provided your net contribution in that year does not exceed £2,880.

Yes, this would work but you could also consider a personal pension rather than a SIPP for your wife. An inexpensive way to do this is through Cavendish Online http://www.cavendishonline.co.uk/pensions/

So I assume you can't go back over to a previous tax year and contribute.

SIPPs can be more expensive as they include assets like singel shareas and commercial property.

If you wont' be using these for your wife, a PP could be cheaper.

Looks to me like a Fidelity SIPP @ 0.35% is cheaper than a Cavendish PP ........? Unless I am misunderstanding something.

you might have found one cheaper, but generally they used to be more expensive (but we are now post RDR so things are changing. Have you checked the rates for holding certain assets? These can differ?

If you are happy with t he charges, and the investment available (and their cost in your chose platform) then go for it?
  • fidelity's SIPP is 0.35% + the cost of the funds held. SIPPs are generally charged like this (a separate charge for the SIPP wrapper).

cavendish PPs may well be a single charge for PP + funds held - though perhaps not all of them are, so check carefully.
