Getting a position after qualifying is it worth just sending out letters even?

I have just finished my Diploma in Counselling and would like to start looking for paid work. There are few jobs in counselling so I know it will not be easy. Does anybody think its worth me writing to the Primary Care Trusts to ask if they have any sessional work available?
If so does anybody know of any sites that can help me compose a letter so it makes the most impact? Only one chance to make a first impression and all that.
Thanks

Congratulations on getting your diploma!

Have you tried asking one of your tutors to help you compile a letter of application? Or the careers service at your uni? I'd have thought tutors would have a good idea what to put and, as they will probably be writing a reference for you at some point, it can't hurt to ask their advice.
I would think it is worth asking around as it's such a difficult area to 'break in to'. Can't do any harm I wouldn't have thought.
Sorry that's probably not much help!
Good luck,
