What exactly is a recruitment consultant?

As a recruitment consultant do you just search job sites for peoples CV', ring them and try to sell them an interview? Interviewing them and CV screening ect and basically just deciding if they're fit for the job or not?

How hard can that be... I know about 20 people just about the graduate university who would jump at the chance of a job in the City, I hardly think I'd had to sell them the job.

Why do they make it sound like such a tough job? Sure it might be hard actually phoning people but lets be honest, almost anyone who is searching for a job will jump at the sight of your phone call lol. The difficult part would be to sell them a job that pays !!!! money and you need to convince them that your company is better than the others.
  • I used to think they were helping people find work, miss-guided I know but more recently have found just what you mention - that is what it is feeling like, it feels like it has never been worse

They have no comprehention of costs involved in recruitment for the jobseeker to then being given nauseous feedback as if it makes it ok

Looking back I've been through agencies who once had shares in a company I didn't know this at the time, there was one who I can hope told their client the truth about me wasn't good when I arrived and all they knew was my name and I didn't know where I was going to work until the morning of 1st day - this was after paying for a DBS and going through such an invasive process, then there was the agent following a different process altogether to the company direct one - totally lost confidence, won't entertain now

A recruitment consultant is essentially a sales person. They source candidates, but they also have to source the vacancies which they recruit for, so in effect selling their services to the employer. The latter is far from easy in a market saturated with agencies and comparatively few job vacancies!

When you say source candidates what you really mean is search for suitable CV's online right? Then when you say source vacancies what you really mean is search your database for jobs that said CV matches?

So basically a job centre advisor... but higher pay.

Yes, they commonly do source candidates online. However they also need to get jobs onto their database - they don't appear there by magic!

No, nothing like a JCP advisor.

If they get a job in and they have no one registered with them they may look online like LinkedIn and Reed etc for candidates. Sometimes even their own site if you are registered on it.

They may contact you saying they have a job and send you the job spec.

How they get jobs? They have consultants who go out and get business. Some companies have preferred agencies they use and the consultants go out to get their business so when jobs come available they only advertise with that one agency.

A lot of time is spent visiting companies and calling people

If the basic pay is, say, £24000, then the absolute worst that can happen is being sacked for not selling after, eg, 2 months. You've made £4k gross. I don't see what the problem is?
