what exactly is a client reference?

I have been self-employed over the last year and have now applied for a position where I have been asked by the employer to supply 2 references. I can provide one employer reference so that's no problem, but as I have been self employed I have also been told that the one can be a client reference.
I have been working online and am not too sure who exactly who I would need to get a client reference from? does it have to be a supplier?

From one of your customers. What type of self employment work have you been doing?0

I would take it to be one of your customers or " clients" so someone you have done work for when self employed.0

Do you really want to take a job with this company? HR procedures tend to be just that, procedures that drones follow to the letter, making sure they have the paperwork but placing no value in its contents.
What possible benefit to their understanding of you as an employee is supplying a client reference? Your hardly likely to give them a contact with a supplier you haven't paid or a customer you've ripped off.0 -
Thanks for the replies, I worked on an online mens accessories ecommerce shop, I can't exactly ask a random customer for a reference?0
