Job Clubs

Has anyone ever used the facilities of a Job Club? If so did you find it useful?

I would be interested to know your experiences as I am going to be a volunteer Job Club Coach starting April.

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton

they run one at our local library which is popular.

  • Please go for it, they are very much needed. I work mainly with long term unemployed and I am shocked how many have no C.V. no covering letter, don't seem to have ever had one. The wait for a course can be months so obviously they cannot apply for jobs properly with that help. We have two wonderful jobclubs nearby and jobseeker love then, I will admit others are not so good but I think thats cause it understaffed.
  • Thanks for your comments. This is a new Job Club starting in April, in partnership with Christians Against Poverty. At the moment there is only me and one other person, but we are having two day's training at CAP HQ in Bradford and also we are going to observe the workings of another Job Club before we start. Hopefully we will get more people on board in the future.

I had visualised something like the situation you detailed above and I see help in the compiling of CVs and covering letters so that they can make a strong application as one of my main tasks.

I'm looking forward to being of use!

See if you can get a small, portable printer for CVs, letters and job information.

Thanks for that idea, I think there is already a printer that we can use in the church office. But I will mention it to the other person involved.

  • Can I give a few word of advice please based on my experience.
Some jobseekers have got into a trap of not thinking they can apply for jobs themselves, they have no skills to put on a C.V. and they don't see why they should change it for every job, I am referring to long time unemployed people. Some have settled for the life they currently have and will expect you to do the C.V for them rather than they have a go themselves, other will have computer issues and need more help but I always say to a jobseeker 'I am there to help them to help themselves to get a job' please dont fall into the trap of doing it for them, please support, help and encourage them to do it for themselves.

Thanks for that advice. A guy from another Job Club said something similar, so we have taken that on board.

Your information is invaluable, thanks again :)

  • Only other advice at the moment is get in touch with your local JCP district office, they will promote the work club within your local JCP. Our local one did that and due to the high number attending they managed to secure funding via the council and one of the volunteers was taken on as a paid member of staff. This club is certainly one of our better clubs and I believe they work with us rather than against us.
Many customers go to the work club saying we will stop there money if they dont get a C.V. done there and then, in my experience yes this may be the case but only after repeated request for them to go and sort it voluntarily.
