New home. Very old boiler. Any point in pursuing the Green deal
Hi,
I have just purchased a property that could use some extra insulation and whose boiler is a serious relic (I estimate at least 20 years old).
Because I earn 17k I just miss out on getting free work done and from what I can gather the Green Deal just isn't worth pursuing. Is there any other avenues out there for me?
Thanks!

Replace the boiler if it breaks, you'll never get your money back by changing to a combi0

Seems to make sense to get replacement cover, but I suspect that'll cost the earth.0 -
if your house is solid walls or a narrow hard to treat cavity or a rural property you should get free or a contribution to insulation on the walls, I'd just buy a boiler the green deal is only worth while if you've got no cash and have a terrible credit history so can't get a conventional loan .
If you speak to a green deal installer or providor and they will ask you some questions on the phone and just make it clear you don't want a green deal just what ever you can get for free and they will help you.
Also don't pay for an ECO assessment if they ask you to do that go to a different company because most reputable companies will give you a free assessment for ECO."talk sense to a fool and he calls you foolish" - Euripides0 -
Keep this boiler as long as you can. Maybe in theory it won't be as efficient as newer models but that inefficiency will still cost you far, far less than a new boiler will, and a new one simply will not last 20 years - you'll be lucky if a new one lasts much more than 5 years, and then you have the whole massive replacement cost again.
My oil fired boiler is nearly 30 years old and the chap who services it says he'll be able to keep it going until the heat exchanger fails, because they're no longer available.
The Green Deal scheme is just another con. If you're going to borrow the money for a new boiler there is cheaper credit than the government deal.0 -
Ok. The pilot light has a habit of going out which is a concern but we will see how it goes.0
