Payday loan fraud

Hello. I am not sure if this is the right place to post but I am looking for some advice from my dad.

My dad has started to receive letters from payday loan companies saying he has defaulted on loans that he has not taken. He has received 6 in less then a month. He has contacted each company after receiving letters 2 have just shut the account to down with no further questions. 1 of them referred him to the national fraud line who have given him a crime reference number which he has given to the another 2 which they have logged on file and have said they are completing their own in investigations, but the one he has received today have said that they want copy of my dads bank statements to prove the money has not gone into his account. So my questions are

Does my dad have to provide copy of his bank statements surely they must have details of the accounts they paid it into and can speak with the helpline. My dad is obviously is nervous to have anyone have his banking details

I will be showing my dad now to sign up for noodle so that he can track searches and be alerted of anyone takes them out but is there anything else he can be doing?

Will be be able to remove the enteries from his credit file?

Many thanks

No he does not need to provide bank statements - do not.

He first needs to see what is on his credit file and he should eventually be able to get the entries removed - but its likely to be a bit of a pain. He'll likely need to write to each to dispute that the debt is anything to do with him and that he never applied for a loan or received them in to his bank account. They should then investigate.

He may want to apply for experian and equifax as not all lenders report to noddle.

He could also consider applyign for CIFAS protective registration which for a small annual fee makes it much harder for anyone to take credit in his name.

Couple of things to check/think about - does he have any dormant bank accounts he isn't using/checking statements of? worth double checking that someone isn't applying using an account in his nameand then taking the money out the bank account (if someone had found out those details) That is a scam that does happen. Has he any idea of anyone who may be doing this? anyone he suspects?

  • Thanks for the advice. I didn't think that he should have to provide bank statements and that sounded a bit strange especially because they others haven't asked. My dad has spoken to his bank and asked if there have been any large deposits made which they have confirmed is not the case.

My dad has only the one bank account that has been opened very recently with TSB. But I will get him to double check other accounts closed.

I will run all credit reports for him and look into the CIFA and help him with the removal of entities.

My dad suffers from severe anxiety and depression and I am worried about how this is affecting him, so want to do as much as I can to help.

I have asked him to have a think if he thinks anyone can be responsible as it must be someone who has access to certain elements of my dad, I.e exact name and address, but it's difficult to ascertain how random or particularly targeted it is when the pay loan companies won't provide my dad with any other details that were provided on application Eg date of birth.

I think I have a good idea of who it might be, but only because someone who previously has no money starts splashing cash on decorating there home when previously they have been broke u can't really accuse without concrete evidence and it might be genuine they have been saving etc.

They just keep arriving in throes at the moment and I am hoping that soon they will have done enough damage to the credit report that they stop getting approved!

    That makes things very difficult.

No, he doesn't have to supply his bank statements. On the other hand the quicker this is cleared up the better for him, so I would consider supplying a statement with his account number blacked out.

This would be a waste of time...
  • It is for the lender to prove it WAS your Dad, not the other way round.

However, if you think you know who the fraudster is, you can report your concerns to ActionFraud.
