Bursaries

Hi,

Does anyone know what professions I might get a bursary to study for? I know some nhs ones like dietician, dental nurse etc but what about other industries like teaching, law, architects etc? Is there anything for those?

Thanks

I don't know the answer, but is choosing your profession on the basis of the availability of a bursary really a sound idea? And do you have the qualifications to allow you to study all of the options you've suggested?

They are all avenues I have interests and I have good level basic/general education and life experience. In an ideal world I wouldn't have to narrow down but I can't afford to just choose whatever I fancy. I need something where there is some financial support. I think it's pretty common for people to base their choices in this way these days as fees are so expensive.
  • You do not have to pay the fees up front. The subjects that do attract bursaries tend to be massively oversubscribed. Perhaps you could tell us your qualifications and experience to date and we can make a some suggestions?

Teaching - you need a degree first in a relevant subject - do you have that? If not, that's where you start. If so, a PGCE/CELTA would be the next port of call depending on what you are teaching and who are you teaching to - incentives (not bursaries) available for Science and Maths at Secondary level to my knowledge, your local Uni would have the most up to date information (you are required to complete X years in a local authority secondary school in order to keep the money.)

Law - very little available, only available to high achievers (1st/2nd in their year at Uni) - oversubscribed profession, depends on what you want to go into after your LLB (FILEX/solicitor/barrister/other)

Architecture - there's very little in the way of financial help - it is a niche employment, so Uni's are very choosy with who they take.

As said by previous posters - why do you want a bursary? You can get a fee loan from uni if it is your first degree (dependent on income/over 25/partner/kids etc) as well as possibly a maintenance loan. Failing that, go to Open Uni, you can still work and get your degree at the same time.

I've got good gcse's, mainly a's and b's, then I didn't do great at college (I enjoyed the pub too much!) but then I went back to uni as a mature student and did a years worth of English and sociology. It's over ten years ago though so I don't think my previous credits apply.

Then I've worked in varied admin/office roles for years. Marketing, local gov, private industry.

So I'm looking for a real change. I'm currently on maternity, actually left my employment whilst pregnant bit kept my maternity benefits so I'm 6 months into my year off.

So no job to go back to and want to build a real career for the future. I have quite eclectic interests, nutrition, design, writing mainly but I do need to go into something with decent earning potential. I'm really not interested in going back into relatively low paid admin which bores the life out of me. It needs to interest me and at least match my previous salary.

I've had a student loan before so I'm not sure if I'm entitled to one again as I still have a balance. I can't afford to pay to study. Hence why I hoped to find something with some financial assistance.

You sound very much like me! I work in PR & Marketing and have worked in local gov. I need a career change and I am considering getting in nutrition and also enjoy writing. I am not pregnant though.

I suggest you ask for this thread to be moved to the Student board where you are more likely to get advice on your loan entitlement and thoughts on what specific qualifications you might need to get on to some of the courses you are considering.
  • The army provide some very generous scholarships through medical school.
  • Hi OP

I'd suggest going to a careers advisor (there's a few available, national careers service, windmills etc) to determine firstly what you want to do, and then what if any qualifications you need.

I doubt you will get a student loan if you have had one before - there are exceptions, but you'd need to speak to student finance (speak to your local Uni for up to date information).

Best of luck, and remember you don't always need a degree, and a degree does not always lead to a well paid job! A college course may well suffice!

If youve had student finance before, you cant get it again

So, NHS would be your only option to retrain and get a degree that is totally funded (plus small bursary). Nursing, midwifery podiatry, radiography, Occ therapist have lowest entry requirements. Dietician and dental technician want top end grades.. although all will require some recent, level 3, science based qualifications
