Question about child benefit

Got a question about child benefit.
Last tax year I was self employed. My turnover exceeded £50,000 (£57k to be precise) but my gross profit and net profit were under £50,000.
My partner (who earns £28k) started claiming child benefit in Oct 2012 when my son was born.
My question is this: Is the benefit calculated on gross earnings or net earnings?
thanks.
