Father in law received a letter this morning from his employers informing him the no longer have work for him. This is due to him been off sick due to having heart stents and sciatica. They paid him about a months statutory sick pay and then sent him this letter. As he was on a 0 contract he is sadly well aware that there is nothing he can do, but now him and mother in law are panicking about money.
Due to this happening they will be suviving on her 20 hour a week wage which is 194 a fortnight and child tax for the grandchild they have living with them.
luckly they own their own house outright but are worrying about been able to avoid the hefty council tax bill, with is over £200 a month, school dinners and obviously daily living expenses on only £560 ish a month.
does anyone know what they could be entitled to? I have tried online calculaters but cannot get on with them due to they wanting to know income from april to april which has obviously now changed but with no option to show changes.
they have informed working tax and that will be ending and I have encoraged them to visit the local council offices but just really dont want them to be fobbed off and made to believe they are not entitled to anything when they are.
any advice appriciated and I apologise in advance for spelling and grammer errors I cannot type properly on these tablets.

He may entitled to contributions ESA, depending on his NI contributions within the last 2 relevant years.
If he has any care and /or mobility needs, he may be able to apply for personal independence payment, (PIP) which isn't based on income.
Someone on child tax credits but not working tax credits is entitled to free school meals. I am not 100% sure of the cut off point in regards to how much money they earn.Sealed pot challenge #232. Gold stars from Sue-UU - :staradmin :staradmin £75.29 banked

do they have full custody of the grandchild?
i.e residence order , special guardianship order ?
the only reason i ask is did they not get the allowances for the grandchild ?0 -
I think there may be a couple of issues with her psy slip and she is going unpsid for 2.5 hours a week or a fortnight not sure. Not looked into esa how does contributions esa work? Is it basically the same as income based?
how is pip decided? He is phyisically okay from the heart stent op but since coming out of hospital he has suffered terribly with a bad back and legs, the doctor has given him codine but said that is all he can take because of the stents.
shes looking for another 4 hours but obviously in the mean time she is worried about affording her council tax bill. On an income like theres does it sound like they may get help with it?
Would the form for free school meals be at the council offices also?
thanks0 -

You can apply for Council Tax Benefit.. this is means tested so depends on the money you have coming in. Also ESA contributions based. This works the same as income based in the initial stages anyway. Is he hoping to return to work at some point?0

Yes as soon as physically fit she'll have him kicked out the door and bringing in a wage. Just fingers crossed its sooner than later if at all because these issues with his back and legs have literally comr out of nowhere. I guess its all that go into hospital with one thing and come out with another lol0 -
As above...he can put in a claim for ESA..but that depends on his NI contributions, Council Tax benefit and maybe PIP. He will need to get a fit note from his GP to send of for his ESA claim.0
