New boiler quotations.

The work I want doing is remove the old boiler and replace with a WB 30si (including a new gas run as the house is 40 years old), remove 8 and replace 7 radiators, fit a temporary tap in the kitchen (present one leaks, but new kitchen is a few months away-I have a new tap to use), remove the old and replace with my new hearth standing gas fire and fit a new syphon on the toilet.

I had a quotation of £2990, for a 6 year warranty and then one for £3280 for the same work but an 8 year warranty. The second quotation is from a WB accredited engineer, who states that he gets to keep the scrap metal, too (I haven't asked the other about this).

Are brand accredited people any better (ie have to prove that they meet standards) or are they like Kennel Club accredited breeders, who get that status by paying up and agreeing to certain things which are never checked ?

A WB accredited RGI will have undergone a training course at WB on their specific range of products, hence the longer warranty. Any install is only as good as the installer.
Don't get an RGI involved with unrelated plumbing jobs: they'll possibly do it, but it's not what they do day-to-day so you'll probably pay a premium rate for that component-get a plumber in.

A WB installer will be on a nice kickback for every one they fit.

That's what I was thinking. The cheaper of the two has good reports on various sites too.

I'm waiting for one more quotation (after one never turned up and the other didn't send a quotation), but I am worried as the three who surveyed before the WB man said my gas pipe went up from the walk-in pantry, over the ceiling then down in the wall to the kitchen boiler, but the WB man says the pipe goes under the floor and he suggested fitting an exterior pipe, which I've never heard of, excepting for supply from the mains.

Someone is not surveying correctly then which should give you a clue as to who to use ;)

WB one day training courses are Free. As most boiler manufacturers are. Its just a way they use to boost sales. Joe blogs has been on a one day course, now he's accredited :T, does this make him a good engineer????

Just because someone is GSI doesn't mean he's good, go off recommendations from family, friends and neighbours etc.
