Family holiday in wales- recommendations plz.

Hi.

I am a stay at home mum. I have a two year old and a four year old and we have never been on a family holiday before. We just about manage to pay the mortgage, food and utility bills with what my husband earns.

Anyway, I have been saving up for a holiday for a few years now and i now have £500. I know this won't allow us to go abroad but I was thinking that a UK holiday would be just as good. I have never been to Wales and so this is where we have decided to go.

We are planning to go In the summer holidays, but could someone recommend where in Wales is best? We want somewhere that's a bit scenic, has a nice beach for the kids and parks for picnics etc. All ideas are welcome.

Also does anyone know of any good places to stay? My brother works for Travelodge and can get us a discount, but would only stay in one if there are beaches etc nearby.

Thank you.

I'd go to Pembrokeshire if it was my choice, some fantastic beaches and beautiful scenery.

When you say beaches nearby, do you mean within walking distance or just not to far in the car? There is a Travelodge in Pembroke Dock which would be a good base for Pembrokeshire if you have a car

  • Hi. Thanks so much for your reply. We do have a car so we could get to places within a reasonable distance. Any particular places you would recommend? Hoping to stay 4 nights.

If money is really tight, have you looked at the Sun holiday deals?

I know someone who goes on a couple every year.
  • I'm biased, but it's another vote for Pembrokeshire! :)

Tenby with its endless beaches may be a better base than Pembroke.......and do come exploring the north of the county too; wild, beautiful and you may well see dolphins. :D

Thanks.....Love the idea of seeing dolphins!

I'll have to do some more research I think. However, I just want a bit of a break and want the kids to enjoy it - that's the main thing.

Any more ideas of where to go or things to see and do are welcome.
  • Ok so I think I have decided on Pembrokeshire. If I book the Pembroke Docks Traveloge through my brother I can get it for £80 for 4 nights mid-week in August.

Does anyone know of any cheaper accomodation in the area?

    Thanks
  • Pembrokeshire is lovely, some good beaches and also you could take the kids to Folly Farm which is near Tenby and is perfect for kids!

Folly Farm is fab for the little ones . Love pembrokeshire too . £80 for 4 nights in August wont be beaten . Travelodge ha its place and i wouldnt be happy to stay there with young uns . Just no space to enjoy . But price is fantastic . I am in North Wales between snowdonia and some stunning beaches of Gwynedd. I will send you what i have for (jut)less than £500 for a week in August IF Pembrokeshire doesnt work out . Oakwood is great too but your little ones are too little .
 hard as nails on the internet . wimp in the real world
  • You can swop Tesco vouchers for Folly Farm entrance tickets.

Also in Tenby there is an icecream parlour - Feccis - which has been there since I was a girl (lol) though the reviews on tripadvisor are abit mixed.

  • I would go to west wales, the cardigan area, there is a great beach called poppit beach which is fab for kids as its wide and shallow with sandunes, lots of lovely secret beaches from cardigan down towards fishguard, then the other side of cardigan you have mwnt beach which is a cove like beach and its gets nice and rocky beaches as you start to heard north towards aberaeron - new quay is a really lovely little town along the coast road

whilst I also like pembroke, tenby can be touristy and busy, if you do go that way then go to solva, newgale and st davids (whitesands beach) but for me, the best area of wales is around cardigan and 20 miles radius of it

as to where to stay, I cant say as I grew up in that area so have always had family to stay with but there are lots of small caravan parks and one that used to be near cardigan island towards mwnt - right up high overlooking the sea - there is also a small one right near poppit beach
