Tips on painting required

I have a living room with a dado rail. I wanted to paint over the peach colour that currently exists on the bottom half of the walls. How would I go about dong this - just paint over with required colour which I want to be a light brown? Or do I have to prepare in some way first?

Thank you for your help.

If its just emulsion then yes you can just paint over it, always worth giving it a wipe over first though with a damp cloth to get rid of dust before you paint it.

Edges first then fill the middle in and feather the paint back out towards the edges again. Mask off any areas you don't want paint on, if there are sockets on the wall loosen the screws off so you can paint the wall behind them, make sure not to splash paint on the electrics - if you aren't confident or you just want to be sure turn the power to the sockets off first.

So I just roll over the main bit of the wall with a roller and the edges with a little brush?

And what do u mean by if it is just emulsion? The pain I am going to use or the pain that is already on the wall? I dont have to make the wall white or anything first then so colours dont mix?

    Thanks

Is white not a colour? How would you stop that mixing if you wanted a white wall?

Just go with your chosen colour as long as they are both water based emulsion and you'll be fine. It will probably take more than one coat.
  • Yes thenap80 you've got the right idea .... though it WOULD help if you can first clean the peach colour with Sugar Soap (cheap enough at Wilkos etc., and GREAT for cleaning other things too!)
Follow the instructions on the sugar soap, and it will help your new paint to "stick" and to leave a more-even finish .....
If (as it sounds ) you're new to decorating, the best advice I could give you is : prepare well first and take your time.
It is far FAR easier to spend time preparing ( like cleaning your wall, making sure any holes are filled and there are no old flakey bits ) than it is to put mistakes right.
As Rodders says, in all probability and WITH CERTAINTY to acheive a good result, you will need more than one coat of paint.

Also, you NEED to know what type of paint is better-suited to which surface.
Gloss, satin or egshell on wood for example, or silk or matt emulsion for walls/ plaster/ paper. Silk may be better for "cleanability" .... but has a - well, "silk"-like shine! :D
Anyway, it looks like you've enough on here to get you started so .... good luck!
    Oh .... and enjoy it!:)

Thankyou so much. I don't really want a shiny finish so will probably go for Matt then.

Oh yes I do have a chip out of one part of the wall - about a cm in length. How will I fill this to make it smooth again. I am told Polyfiller. Is this an easy process. What is the name of the actual thing I need to use as Polyfiller is a brand is it not.

    Thanks!!!
  • It's filler, and Polyfilla is one brand
  • I would give you some tips but my wife recons I'm the most anal person in the world when it comes to painting so I better not start as I don't have all day...... All I will say is, it's all in the preparation....... :-)
