Painting a small bathroom ceiling advice please.

My bathroom ceiling is all peeling away and looks a tad mouldy. I am therefore wanting to spruce it up but do not know where to start. DO need to rip down all the flaking stuff which I assume is dry paint and paint over with a bathroom paint?

The bathroom has a shower in it but no fan. It does have a window which will obviously need to be opened more in future to lessen the dampness on the ceiling but at the moment I need advice on re doing the ceiling.

Thank you

You'll need to get rid of anything remotely loose as painting onto that will simply result in the new paint flaking off with the old. I'd run a scraper over it to get the worst off and then sand it - if you have any doubts about the age of the paint viz it having lead in it, wear a mask to avoid breathing in the dust.

If you have a slight mould problem and want a white ceiling, I'd recommend Zinsser Perma White paint (may need to go to a specialist merchant to get it). 2 coats of that (takes 2 hours to dry in between) will seal it and make it mould proof in one go. Standard bathroom paint is often better at dealing with wet but won't necessarily have any mould inhibitor in it.
