With regards to the 32/64 bit, did it come with 32bit pre installed? if so its unlikly that your processor is 64 bit and thefore not much point in upgrading to 64 bit.

From whence did you dig up this gem?

From which century do you imagine this laptop comes?

They have Windows 7 64-bit Drivers available.

it is theoretically possible that the hardware is only 32bit (altho unlikely)
There are some modern processors that are not 64bit comparable, mainly some of the atom's and via's mini-itx, but you don't generally find these in laptops.

64bit hardware and 32bit XP was very common, many prebuilt windows 7 machines shipped with 32bit OS as well, despite having 64bit processors, and in some cases, more than 4gb ram.

    !!!!!!!

It came with Windows XP, so even if it was 64bit capable it wasn't going to come with a 64bit OS.

Yes I know XP64 exists, but it's an incredibly rare developer-only OS and basically nothing works on it.

My main thought is XP 32 bit not using the full 4GB RAM. I wondered how the performance would compare if I went to Windows 7 and whether to go for 32 bit or 64 bit?

What do you want to use your laptop for? If you need to use some Windows specific software I'd say go for the 64 bit Win7 (assuming your processor is 64 bit). If you don't need to use Windows specific software, I'd suggest giving Linux a try: it's free, and fast.

I've got Win7 on my desktop, to run games. I put Elementary Linux on my (old) laptop, used to process documents and research (as well as generic web surfing), and it's been given a new lease of life.

Ubuntu is a Linux distro that would possible run well on your machine: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HJ4tGi8moXc

    No, it is not.

The OP named the machine in question.

I must admit it came with Vista Home Premium and I installed XP Pro instead as I don't really have a fondness for Vista. As I have heard many say, 'Windows 7 is what Vista should have been'
It came with 2GB RAM, I upgraded it to 4GB (think that's the max)

To be honest mostly browsing the net and playing online games, working on Office documents etc.
I have two raspberry Pi's which are my playground for Linux, one plays HD video nicely and the other is a webserver publishing data from my wifi thermostat and weather station. Amazing little things but that's sidetracking a bit...
