Hi- I want to be debt free.

Hi *waves*
I am almost 30, my husband is going to leave me and the kids and I will have no car and a wad of debt!
I have just arranged nursery for he kids so I can stay at work, 3 in nursery full time is expensive, I'll need to buy a car as there is no bus that can get me to nursery and on to work on time, and I have 1000 for this as a gift from my lovely mum along with £800 to insure the car ( I have not gotten any no claims, but have pass plus).
Where do I start??
Debt is approx £18,000 split between my maiden name and married name and I can only see the stuff in my married name on my credit file so I need to address that. I was thinking of contacting step change etc to get started. What do u guys think?.

  • Hi there.
Sorry to hear about your marital troubles.
First thing to do is put together an SoA (Statement of affairs).
Someone will be along with the link.
Then the peeps on here can have a look at make some suggestions.
Is all the debt in your name or have you joint debts with other half?
Try to get SoA as accurate as you can.
    Will wait to see it.
You've come to the right place if you are serious about wanting help to address this debt situation.:)

This is a good thing to do, but I would suggest you be ready to change it if there are about to be massive changes in your life.
Also, get some advice on what benefits may be available to you - Childcare etc can be subsidised or paid in tax efficient ways.

  • Thanks for the links, some of the details I don't know yet as I have just had to re- apply for tax credits and my uni bursary as I'm now a single party.
As soon as I have these figures I can post an accurate SOA but I will take to estimates for the tax credits website late to try and get a rough guide, even if my incomings are slightly out at least you guys will be able to assist me lowering my output/ spending.

  • hi and welcome! you are in good company here :)

have you informed benefits people you are now single? you will get child tax credits and help towards nursery costs (even if he has not left the house yet, as long as you are no longer together you can claim)

is any of the debt his? any joint debt? whose name is the house in?

Is he paying child support? if not contact CSA asap.

once he has left tell the council, so you only pay single persons council tax

fill out SOA as soon as possible, stepchange will help you massively and it will be good if you have the SOA ready when you call them.

Finally, are you ok? make sure you have emotional support, splitting up is awful.make sure you get out and see your friends/family/have some fun :) good luck

  • Hi asparagus- emotionally I'm better than when we were together, we were financially crippled due to his ( and then my) spending habits, also if was waiting for this to happen as was ' walking on eggshells' all of the time.
    I think this is best.
ATM he is staying at the house a few nights a week as my shift pattern means that I have been on nights ( nursing), work will try their best to accommodate my situation but there are no guarantees and I will continue to be on shift at varying times.
Ex is a bit of a !!!! really and is now looking for a job so he can get his own place and not be Kipling at mates houses ( if he had gotten a job when we were together we would have been ok probably) so I'm just moving forward.
I'm hoping the kids are not affected but I think it is naïeve (sp?) of me to think they are completely shielded from it all.
The kids can start nursery full time in March and I have just applied for a student loan ( something I really didn't want to do), I need however to pay the first months nursery fees up front so this will at least get that sorted so I can stay in work/ at school.
Thanks for your post, I'm feeling better already.
    Much love LA x
