Living room being skimmed - order of doing things

Hello

We are having our living room skimmed , inc ceiling , late Jan , we are trying to combine what needs doing ,and put it in order..

We need to pull up the laminate , ready for carpet , remove skirtings and replace plug sockets and aerial points ,along with ceiling light, and obviously , decorate

So i am thinking , prior to plasterer arriving , rip up laminate , and chisel away skirts , remove ceiling light , remove plug sockets and aerial point , let plastering commence , then reinstall electric points , aerial point and light (left hanging down) , wait for plaster to dry , get it painted etc , then install skirting board , then get carpeted

Does that sound right?

What i wanted to see , was with regards to plug sockets and light fittings , how do i secure the ends whilst work is carried out , junction boxes , insulation tape...??

Any thoughts welcome

The order you state is pretty good but you may with to leave down the laminate while the plastering is done, then any spillage / drit etc can be removed when you take up the laminate. Either way is fine though.

The other either / or option is to get the carpet put down before the skirting boards.

In regards to the sockets / light fittings speak to your plasterer and see what they'd prefer. I'd just tape up the ends but others would put on junction boxes. I would have though that you would unscrew the light fitting from the ceiling and leave it hanging down so there is still a light available.

Thanks Kenny , i had been told that carpet fitters prefer to `butt` up to the skirting , which is why i assumed fit that prior to carpet ?

Depends on ceiling height. Laminate, wet plaster and a plasterer on stilts. Not a good idea.

And risk gloss paint on the new carpet?

    Only my thoughts.

Skim, mist coat, skirting and architrave then paint is what I'd do.
  • Get a retreading if you have flush back boxes or you could be on all day fitting the face plates.

Skirting board before carpet, carpet up to SB... but leave at least two weeks between painting skirting & carpet laying... a good fitter won't mark the carpet with sticky paint, but the paint will still be soft at first, and will invariably be marked, or get fluff adhered to it at least... that's my experience anyway.

I'd be tempted to leave laminate down while plastering... they can be messy folk, them, plasterers.

It won't let me post a link. Have a look at toolstation item 58127.

If they get crud in the box and they will going over the edge. Any plaster in the screw thread can be removed with one. Like a tap on a screwdriver handle.

Why are you removing the boxes on the block walls?

I'd like to see you get one back in with a grommet on and the wire through after you've painted.
