I had this on a house I bought. It was just that the previous occupants hadn't opened windows (no ventilation) and left the house too cold.
I treated all the mould with a strong bleach spray and lots of elbow grease. Then redecorated.
It hasn't come back since.
If yours isn't caused by underlying damp issues from outside then the above should cure. I always ensure the windows in the rooms affected are open a fraction even in winter.0 -
My husband says that water is coming in. He is a plumber. He says that either there is a leak from above or it is coming in from outside. Has there been heavy rain? If there is a cavity the water is bridging it or if a solid wall then it is saturated. The forest would be very silent if no birds sang except for the birds that sang the best0

to me thats penetrating damp, as its taking on the shape of the bricks. BUT it could also be bad condensation. i have been to hundreds of jobs where the owner believed it was damp. They bought a de humidifier, and i told them to ring me if the problem persisted. ive never heard from them. Theres quite a lot of water there. Can you take a photo of the outside of that wall?0

Hi you need to investigate 1. if condensation what is the source of evaporation.
2. has there been a change in use ie new central heating
3. has double glazing been recently fitted
4. has the loft insulation been upgraded
These all could affect condensation cavity wall isulation can help. also eliminate leaking gutters leaking header tank, central heating leak. In my experience with damp ventilation is key, it goes against new green measures where restricted air movement is vital, Some houses just cant go green without spending thousands. a small fan blowing up the corner and trickle vents on windows can keep most of it at bay. Dont put furniture tight into the corner as it stops air movemet and encourages mould. Good hunting0 -
Looks like serious water getting in from somewhere; especially as the building block mortar seems to be saturated, I'd get a recommended builder in to take a good look.0

also check the outside walls for cracks , check guttering , downpies etc0

We had similar under the stairs in our old house, you could see the mortar pattern in the wall, we thought it was condensation/damp but water was entering from a small leak in the guttering.0
