Kent & London - days out for relatives. Help me please! :-)

Hiya everyone!

I am a regular user of MSE but I'm not sure if this is the right place to post.

I have 3 relatives visiting me for the next 2 weeks from Mauritius, ranging from 20s to 60s in age! I would like to be as savvy as possible but show them together the nice places in Kent and London. Any recommendations where to take them and any money saving tips?

For some of the trips it will be my 3 rels from Mauritius plus my mum and on other trips I will join them, if I can get time off work. Your advice and tips welcome!

Cheers,

Vijay   :j

Take them to the museums in London. They are free! And be savvy and take a packed lunch and eat it on the benches or outside if the weather is nice. Also a rucksack so that you can put your shopping/coats/jackets in it and not have to queue and fork out for the cloakrooms. So that's the V&A, Natural History, British Museum and Science Museum.

In Kent if the weather's nice then Leeds Castle is good. I think NatWest credit card holders get money off admission.

Get them on a guided bus tour of London!

Great day out and they can hop on and off if they want to :)
My second favorite household chore is ironing. My first being, hitting my head on the top bunk bed until I faint.

Not cheap, but a brilliant day out - Dover Castle.
We took my parents there last year and they are still talking about it.

Leeds Castle, as per a previous poster. Dont forget that your tickets will last a whole year, so dont throw them away.

  • I bet they will have a list of places they want to visit already. I used to drive all around Kent as part of my job, and on the whole I would say it is a wonderful county. My suggestion there is of course for a visit to Rochester, a day at the seaside - Whitstable, Canterbury, maybe Tunbridge Wells. Nothing staggeringly original in that list, but they will get a taste of England.
London; again I think you have to stick to some the old regular tourist spots. I won't list them here Though I would personally avoid going into the Tower of London, (I was there last month - for free) at £16 pp it is poor value. Kensington Palace is better (though it had my republican hackles rising) the decoration in some of the rooms is stunning, and some of the stories associated with the place fascinating. Hampton Court on the banks of the Thames is worth a visit (though it's further out.) The delightful gardens and the guided tours are in the £12 admission price. Think about tea at the Ritz, Savoy, Fortnam and Masons. The British Museum, Victoria and Albert etc, a wander around Soho, or the City of London. A visit to pub, like Ye Olde Mitre in Holborn.

You can go to both as they're next door to each other, the V&A is across the street too!

I love getting the train to London Bridge and walking along the river to Tate Modern. You go past the Globe Theatre too which is very impressive. If you carry on strolling you get to the London Eye.
