Old Boiler Behind Fire - Cost of new one

Hi,

I've got a really old boiler behind our fireplace in our front room. It's pretty inefficient, and I would love to get combi boiler so I can actually have a full bath of hot water!!

Does anyone have any idea how much it'd cost to get this old boiler taken out/turned off and a new one put in.

I don't even know how to access the boiler as it's behind the gas fire. We're in rented so hopefully I'd be able to pass on any costs to my landlord if they were happy for me to get it replaced.

I dont think you can directly replace an old back boiler, i think you would have to have a standard combi put somwhere else and replace the fire front separately.
your probably looking at around 3K for the new boiler + moving + pipework mods + new fireplace.
Thats if your old heating circuit is suitable, if not up that to 5-6K.
Its certainly not cheap, unless you can get your landlord to pay for it, you will be looking at a big loss :-(

When we did this we just left the old back boiler in situ and had the new combi boier placed elsewhere. It cost us a tad over a grand, 20 years ago. (Not much help that last bit!)

You won't get any money back from the landlord, the boiler is working ok, it is doing what it is intended to do.

CH is not my forte, but I don't think the boiler is the issue. The hot water tank is. It is most likely too small to fill the bath.

You may be better getting someone around and asking if a larger hot water tank would help. It would certainly work out a hell of a lot cheaper.

You wanting a full bath of water is not the problem of your landlord, so I don't see him paying up for anything he doesn't have to do.

The hot water tank is not too small unless it's the size of a bucket! It could be anything from the cylinder thermostat, to the mid position valve etc. I would get someone to take a look, there's plenty of old back boilers that can heat a cylinder of hot water without any issue. What is the temperature set to on the thermostat on the hot water cylinder? (assuming it has one and isn't a gravity system)
