Good, cheap, wireless router recommendations needed please.

Hi, Ive just bought my first wireless device, a Nexus 7 tablet. I have always used a desktop pc with virgin broadband so am completely new to wireless technology. I have just connected a D link wireless router that i was given free years ago when i first signed up to Virgin but it seems it is faulty. (I have spoken to an advisor at Virgin)

Please could anyone recommend a good cheap wireless router as i am totally confused with all the technical jargon associated with choosing one. I would really appreciate any help or advise. Thanks.

Do you not have a VM superhub? That doubles as a wireless router.

    Its cable.

No i don't have a vm super hub.
  • Hi

What's the problem with the D-Link? If it's a 615 you can flash it with DD-WRT firmware and end up with a rock solid router.

What issues are you having, might be able to help.

    Hi Dave,
Yes its a DIR 615. I keep on losing connection, with my desktop and, even more so with my new Nexus tablet. Its happening often, say every 30 mins. The D link hasn't left its box since i signed up to VM quite a few years ago, only just tried to use it. Had no problems at all with connection on desk top until i connected up the D Link. Advisor at VM ran some checks, couldn't find what the problem was so put it down to a faulty D Link.
What is DD-WRT firmware? and what does it do?
    Many thanks for your help.

I'd start by changing the wireless channel if more than one device is affected. A potential fix that takes a few minutes-and cost free.
However I'm not clear how you are connecting the desktop PC-wireless or ethernet? if the latter, then it is indeed probably a router issue-or an issue with your VM install or service.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

Hi Macman. I've already tried changing the channel, as did the VM advisor, remotely.

The desktop pc has a cisco cable modem 2100 which works fine by itself. The problem started when i connected the D Link to go wireless. An ethernet cable is connecting the D link router to both my desktop and the cable modem. thank you for your help.

haggle a free one from virgin (might not solve your problem), and ask for a discount at the same time, if no joy ask for retentions or select the thinking of leaving us touchtone option, and research alternative prices to aid the haggling process

What is the H/W and F/W versions on the 615? I'm guessing H/W either D2 or D4 and F/W 1.00? If so it can be flashed, which is likely to cure your problems. Happy to guide you through the process.

Have a look at https://www.dd-wrt.com for starters. It's pretty straightforward to flash and the DD-WRT firmware is rock solid.
