Painting MDF shelves

hi

i am looking to paint some MDF shelves we have put up in small alcove for shoe storage. I have got MDF primer and paint. Probably will do one or two layer of primer and one of paint! I am by not means after an excellent smooth finish but just want a "finished" look while also protecting wood.

I want to ask

1) any advise on how much time to allow betwen putting on primer and paint?
2) What grain sandpaper should i use?
3) I dont have an electric sander (not even sure if it can be used on MDF). any advise on sanding as easy as possible. are there any tools which may help (other than electric sander)?

    Read the tin.
    2) What grain sandpaper should i use? P 180 or any fine enough not to leave deep scratches. Vacuum and damp cloth before re-coating.
