refinishing dining table

We have a lovely round drop leaf dining table, finished in ebony. Unfortunately the staining is flaking off the surface of the table top due to being placed too close to a radiator for many years.

We want to refinish the table top. We have been advised to use Dulux woodsheen to finish the table with, but were looking for advice/tips on the best way to achieve a good finish. i.e. removing the old varnish/stain, what type of brush, what type of varnisg/staing if the dulux woodsheen wouldn't be suitable.

There is a shine to the rest of the table but nothing like a mirror finish, just a nice sheen when cleaned.

Any help/advice appreciated.
