2014: The year of the house...

Hi everyone! Firstly let me introduce myself... I am roxy, mum of 2 cuties, wife of a chef, and I work in a hospital on a childrens ward as a HCA. We are not in any major debt...just yet (other than the mortgage) BUT our house needs a lot doing to it and next year is the year we need to get stuck in.
Sooooo the work that needs doing is a full rewire, new fusebox, earthing, new boiler, pipes and radiators, a load of work on rising damp... and a new kitchen! The kitchen isn't as essential as the rest but I need to have something so look forward to in all this! The rough amount we have decided on to spend on all of this providing we don't run into any problems is 15k, which is why I am here! We can just about afford the monthly repayments on this, some of it is a loan on the mortgage, some of it will most probably be a 5year personal loan so I am looking forward to getting stuck in to saving money wherever I can! Wish me luck!

PS I have been lurking for AGES!!!! Very excited to be joining in all the money saving fun!

    Hi roxy

We are currently renovating a house and I think we are set to spend a lot less than you are. although we haven't got rising damp So far we have spent around £4.5k and so far have had a total rewire & fuse box, knocked 2 rooms into 1 completed gutted and replaced the kitchen, have plastered the spare room, the bathroom is 60% finished, again was a total replacement because it is a small size we had to get space saving furniture and we are tiling the whole room. I have really looked around for the best prices, bought a lot of stuff 2nd hand, ebay, freecycle and online suppliers. We got our kitchen carcasses from a card out of a supermarket for sale board for £150 and the doors from ikea and the wooden worktops from ebay, reclaimed the floorboards. It has kept the cost down that my brother is doing the work so I haven't had to pay tradesmen and everything else we have done. A friend f mine renovated a house and advised me to get a kitchen from ebay, get a bigger kitchen than you need and then cut it down to fit yours. You can save thousands.

after the bathroom we just have the lounge, our bedroom & garden to do and I expect it to come in under £4k

I just wanted to let you know it doesn't have to be as expensive as you think it needs to be. For spending £8.5k we expect to put around £20k value on our house. Good luck!
