Buying a "family" house in South West London

Your choices here will be hugely affected by how you travel, and where to.
If you are reliant on public transport (even occasionally) some places will be less desirable. Ham, for instance, completely relies on buses and the traffic can be a pain through Petersham.
Hampton is nice, as is Lower Sunbury, Fulwell, Twickenham Green and the Moleseys. The further out you go, the more you get for the money, so places like Addlestone, Shepperton and Weybridge may suit.
Ealing Broadway is actually a pain to get to from most of that area on public transport. Either one of you might be better off on two wheels than four

have a look at old/new malden, it might come close to meeting your requirements!
Another vote for New Malden. Best kept secret in SW London/Surrey borders. Good schools, low crime, good trains (zone 4, 25 mins to Vauxhall), spacious, villagey, (comparatively) easy parking, good stores, handy for Kingston shops.

I'm in Richmond and all I could afford was a tiny one-bed flat. I dream of owning a house around here one day, but for the significant future I think that will remain a dream. I regularly spend 20 minutes every week or so on rightmove etc window shopping. For a *small* two-bed terraced 'cottage' (early 1900's) on my road, there is nothing under £500,000.
I am about 15 minutes walk from the main high street on a nice quiet tree-lined road.
Ham is lovely, but with no rail or tube links it is a bit more of a faff for commuting. If I lived in Ham I would bike to Richmond station and then train from there. Only a 15 minute cycle at most. 15 minutes the other way and you're at Kingston station.0 -
You should be able to get one of the 2/3 bedroom houses on the Wates estate in Ham for your budget, such as this one http://www.webpropertylist.co.uk/cgi-bin/clients/mervynsmith/details.pl?propertyID=40725
It would be one of the smaller ones though - not the one with the garage, although most of the houses in Ham come with a communal garage area and there's usually plenty of on street parking.
65 bus to Ealing Broadway, Richmond Station is just over a couple of miles walk away, 35-40 min. Or if you live nearer Teddington Lock, you could walk over and catch a train from Teddington Station.0 -
