What should I pay for a new kitchen?

Hi, I have never paid for a new kitchen before. I have found it a challenge going to shops and having quotes.

I need my kitchen ripped out and replaced, re-wired, fresh walls and floor. I would like a solid work top which I know will cost more and tiles on the walls and floor. My kitchen in 9ft by 9ft approx.

I was thinking about having separate appliances rather than having a quote covering them. I live in the South and would expect more of a premium.

What would you recommend for the kitchen and all the works? Is it better to go for independents or a chain?

I also have to think about paying for all the new appliances and boiler.

Should I expect to pay a % of what I think my house is worth?

Thanks to anyone that can help.

I have just had a kitchen fitted in Nottingham, they made a great job it took three weeks from start to finish, internal walls removed, ceiling re boarded, electrical and plumbing alterations and a new fitted Karndean floor.
The kitchen is a lot bigger than yours,in total 17 units,Silestone Quartz top and all Siemens appliances.
I paid 20k ,the appliances and worktop, sink, and taps came to 10K,units £6500 and £3500 for the fitters ,plumbers ,electricians ,plasterers, and floor fitter and decorator.
I got a better deal on the appliances from the kitchen company than buying off line,
    Good luck
  • Thanks for your reply. The cost of the fitters seems really reasonable compared to 5k suggested to me especially as you have a bigger kitchen.

I am keen to pay the right price for a kitchen rather than realise at a later date I was sucked into marketing pitches and push the boat out too.

I would be happy to hear from anyone else to, to help me.

Debbie - Your kitchen can cost whatever you like. Buying cheap appliances can get you a set of as little a £2k. Neff/Siemens will take it to about £3.5-4k. Miele could take it to £10k. Furniture cost will depend on size, finish and specification. A small kitchen isn't necessarily cheaper if you specify clever corner solutions as these are often quite expensive but for decent quality you could be looking at upwards of £5k for the furniture.

Labour will be higher in the south but for flooring, ripout, plastering, electrics and fitting a £4k + VAT figure is not unreasonable at all.

    Debbie,
I am in a similar position but have shopped around and as I'm willing to do a fair bit of research and design work myself to save on costs I am planning on ordering my kitchen online. Hoping to go to diy-kitchens for units, and possibly appliances as they price match on certain brands. Was going to get laminate worktops but that has been proving a nightmare as we are having curved end units on a breakfast bar and getting the edging to match is nearly impossible. Also, the choice of wood finishes is very limited so we are seriously thinking of getting real wood and ordering it from worktop - express. They can do all our cuts, finishing and pre-oiling for less than 1k for over 7metres. The kitchen I am looking at is working out around 3.5k for over 20 units but the same in magnet would I reckon cost close to 10k. When I told the woman there that my budget for the whole kitchen was around 6k she smiled and said I should discuss the budget further with my husband and she couldn't help me at that price!
We are knocking down 2 walks and have just found out that one might be load bearing so looks like we might not be able to do the whole lot for under 10 thousand as hoped!

I recently had a new kitchen fitted, it isn't a very big room, approx 8'x8'. It was fully replastered first and cost in the region of £8.5k for everything, including Neff appliances & integrated washing machine, wall & floor tiles, labour etc.

My kitchen units came from Benchmarx as they gave the best quote for the particular style of kitchen that I wanted. The cupboard handles I bought via Ebay as they worked out a third of the cost as the kitchen places charge & all my appliances, sink, tap etc. I sourced myself mostly via the internet.

Sourcing as many of the 'extra' items yourself is the best way to save money & you're not limited to choosing only from those offered by the kitchen company.

Before deciding on a kitchen, check if all items are kept in stock as there is nothing worse than something missing or found to be damaged once it comes to be fitted & the company has to order it in with perhaps a 4 week wait, which is what I've heard happen to people.
The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.

I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.
  • Thank you all for your replies. They have definitely been helpful.

I think I have been able to take a number of things from what has been said.

I do feel I have been given a quote recently that I feel slightly pushed into agreeing to and I feel I should have more time to compare things. I need to have the ability to discuss swapping certain products for cheaper versions.

I have come to realise I want a nice fresh, better designed kitchen, but I am not desperate on any specific version from a specific shop, so I don't need to pay a premium. I feel that I therefore have the scope to negotiate and find what's right for me and a more comfortable budget. I have been thinking about how many hours I would have to work to pay for excesses I may not need.

I feel that the price I want to pay might me at least 3k less than I have been quoted and I feel this may well be quite likely based on what I have read today.
