Scrapped Car with Certificate - Tax Renewal??
We scrapped our car at an authorised dealer on the 30th September this year. We received (and still have) a certificate of destruction. Today we received a letter from the DVLA about tax renewal.
Husband has just got off the phone to the DVLA who rather than wanting the certificate number wanted us to send them the V5C - which we don't have obviously.
I am so confused as I was under the impression that getting certificate of destruction severed our connection with the car! Should we get in touch with scrapyard as well as sending the DVLA a letter and copy of the certificate (from two post offices with proof of postage)?

What happened to the V5?
It's the registered keeper's responsibility to inform the DVLA of any changes such as having the vehicle scrapped.
Normally you fill in the address of the business where it was scrapped on the V5 and post it off.All your base are belong to us.0 -
The scrapyard took the entire thing, gave hubby the certificate of destruction that is done on the DVLA website and printed off and told us that we wouldn't hear from anyone regarding the car again.Spam Reporter Extraordinaire

This is the bit I think relates to us:
Cars, light vans and 3-wheeled vehicles
If the ATF agrees to scrap your vehicle they’ll give you a Certificate of Destruction (CoD) straightaway or within 7 days of issue if you’re scrapping a:- car
- light van
- 3-wheeled motor vehicle (but not a motor tricycle)

If it is a registered ATF, they keep the V5C and issue a Certificate of Destruction and notify DVLA that the vehicle has been destroyed, which discharges the keepers responsibility for the vehicle. (as in the OP's case).
It is only if a CoD is not issued that the keeper and the scrapyard need to complete their relevant parts of the V5C/3, which the keeper sends it to the DVLA and the scrapyard keep the rest of the V5C.0 -
Ahh thanks for that, i never knew.
Sounds like typical DVLAAll your base are belong to us.0 -

DVLA can take several weeks to process documents, and tax reminders can be produced several weeks in advance. As long as you have the CoD, I would ignore the reminder.0 -

If you have cert of destruction (computer generated) then just ignore the DVLA, they will send threatening letters and may even threaten court but you have nothing to worry about.Be Alert..........Britain needs lerts.0
