Contract coming to an end....

Hi, for Christmas 2011 I bought my wife an iPhone 4 on an Orange 24month contract. It's due to expire this December
She perhaps makes around 10minutes worth of calls and send no more than 20 texts per month and uses it mostly for web browsing when in the house (so on WiFi) but it is also handy to have web access when out and about.
I'm thinking we should switch to some sort of pay as you go tariff. We currently pay around £39 a month including insurance.
We'll probably cancel the insurance as if she lost the phone or it got broken we'd probably just start another contract with a newer handset?
She's quite happy with the handset - I suppose if it worked out we could significantly reduce costs and upgrade the handset (4S?) we might consider that.
What are the options?
I don't own a personal mobile myself so I'm completely in dark about what is best course of action....help!

get an ovivo sim, pay £15 (or maybe £20) as a one off then get about 100 mins 300 text and 200mb internet for free, for life.

you'll need to get the phone unlocked tho.
oh and your contract doesn't end or expire after 24 months, the minimum term does. you will need to phone and give orange a month notice to disconnect the line or get a PAC code, should you want to keep your number.0 -
Do you realise that you've paid nearly £1,000 for that phone? 24*£39=£936. That is a lot of money for a phone and your wife doesn't use that much.
For much less than half this amount you could have got a laptop or tablet AND a nice smart phone. Nice Android phones can be had for less than £100 these days and decent laptops or tablets can be had from between £100 and £300 PAYG for calls, texts and data for very light users costs practically nothing these days.
Get the phone unlocked and then give notice on the contract and get a cheap PAYG sim.
Ovivo give 150 minutes, 250 texts and 500mb free each month for a one off cost of £20.
White Mobile charge 3p per minute for calls to landlines, 6p per minute for calls to mobiles and 5p for text messages.
Then put all that money that you've flushing down the drain each month towards something nice - a holiday perhaps?0 -
Phone - Buy Iphone 5S if she want to stick with Apple. Nexus 5 Release on 01/11, worth consider
Tariff - Ovivo. Or Three 3 2 1 PAYG
Insurance - Consider Nationwide FlexPlus account0 -
Great thanks - looks like Ovivo is the way to go....and thanks for the heads up on the cancelling the contract, I would've logged into the Orange website this morning to see what my options were going to be if it hadn't been down!
...and I know it was alot to pay but it seemed the cheapest way to get an iPhone at the time...the insurance costs £12 per month.
Looking forward to making those savings come January! Cheers.0 -
u didnt have to take the standard insurance thats alot of money per month-bank or house insurance would have been cheaperWhat goes around-comes around0

The contract doesn't 'expire' in December. It continues until you give 30 days notice. No free lunch, and no free laptop0

I 'downgraded' my Orange iPhone contract to Dolphin7
£7pcm
150 mins
500 texts
250 mB data
No need to go through the (tedious) process of unlocking0
