A Debt for a bank account i was supposed to have opened 17 years ago!

Hi
i have been receiving numerous letters and calls from a company called Robinson Way who are acting for lloyds regarding an account that was supposedely opened by me 17 years ago with my ex-husband which had an overdraft on. Charges were added to the account which has been inactive for over seven years and now totals £200.00. Firstly i dont ever remember opening an account with Lloyds i have never banked with them, so have asked them to prove i actually opened this account and to date all they can produce is statements to say it was in mine and my ex-husband's name who i should say was made bankrupt in 2006. They have let charges accumulate on this account for over seven years without any activity and have still been writing to an address i lived at over eight years ago. I dont ever remember opening this and have asked them to put me to proof re this but they havent and said they dont have to! I have contacted the FSA who are now involved but just wanted to ask if anyone knows if this would be statue barred and how can they chase for a debt if it is in dispute?
any thoughts welcome.:j

Difficult to answer the question about whether it would be statute barred, especially as it was an overdraft.
It sounds likely it would be statute barred but could possibly not be. E.g. if your ex had an income payment arrangement under his bankruptcy then they could have been getting very small payments from him up until 2009.
They should certainly send you proof of your liability for the debt. And they should cease debt collection for a debt that is reasonably in dispute (you might want to quote some of the relevant clauses of the OFT debt collection guidelines to them).
Are you just communicating with them in writing? not speaking to them at all? If you have been speaking to them on the phone I would stop doing so and keep everything in writing.A smile enriches those who receive without making poorer those who giveor "It costs nowt to be nice"0
