On EDF fixed to May 2014 - do I switch?

Having spent the last hour trying to work out what to do, I need some help.

I'm currently on the EDF Blue fixed price deal until May 2014.

Using the comparison calculator, it would cost me an addtional £23 per month to change to the EDF Blue fixed price tarrif until 2017.

It would cost just £3 per month extra to switch to the EDF fixed tarrif until May 2015.

I delved into the standing charge and unit charge for each tarrif, and surprise suprise, the 2017 deal has much higher costs, hence the huge difference in price.

I don't know what to do - do stick with what I've got until May 2014 and then look to switch, or switch now till 2015 with a small increase, or take the gamble and switch to the 4 year fixed?

It just seems like a big con to me - paying almost £280 per year more than I am paying now for the next 4 years seems a little steep to me, especially as they have jacked up the prices to compensate.

I just feel like the energy companies know what they are doing, and overall I will probably end up saving very little on average (if at all) over the course of the next few years anyway.

My gut feeling is to switch to the fixed to 2015 tarrif, and see how it goes then....

Thanks in advance to those willing to take the time to reply, I know I'm new in this forum!

Tried it just now and it wouldn't let me. Have we missed the boat?

I too was in the same position as you and came to the same conclusion,I have fixed until March 2015 it only costs me £2 a month more so I think it is worth it to fix for another winter, then see how things go.
  • Same situation. Standing charges for 2015 though are the same as 2017 so this is £2.25 a month extra for either tariff. It would cost me £16 extra or £38 extra for the longer fix.

As I have just retired I need to balance fixed budget with possible additional heating for being at home for most of the day.

Difficult to decide, but don't want to miss the boat.

I'm on the EDF April 2014 fixed tariff. It will cost me about another £10 per month for the 2015 tariff, but about £30 per month for the 2017 tariff.

This is the dilemma - being on the best tariff around means that the hikes are more obvious. I'm not minded to go for the 2017 hike. Even going for the 2015 tariff means that I'm losing out on the good prices now, and chances are that I'd jump early from the 2015 tariff in a year's time in a similar way.

So I'll probably stay put and get another winter out of the current decent prices.
