Renewing car insurance after an accident...

Hi

This is my first post!

Someone drove into the back of my car while I was stationary. The third party wrote soon after the accident accepting full liability, but the claim is still outstanding as the third party haven't yet paid the costs to my insurer.

My current insurers tell me that it will continue to be listed as a 'fault' claim until they've recovered all their costs from the third party. This means my premium has shot up for when I am due to renew v soon! They said I could try to claim back the additional premium i've had to pay as a result of the claim not being settled, but only after the claim is settled. Should I renew with my current insurers to ensure I can get that refund when the time comes, or is it safe to switch to another insurer but still try to claim when the claim is settled?

Thanks! I really don't know what to decide!

Explain your circs to any new insurer you decide to go to.

Ask that they agree to amend your premium after the claim is concluded and your ncd is reinstated, and refund any overpayment.

If they agree get them to confirm this in writing.
  • Thanks Quentin. That sounds like very good advice :)

I hadn't realised that if I changed insurer then it would be the new insurer who would be able to refund me (if they agreed of course).

I had a similar problem a good few years back, a car had hit my car and the claim was outstanding. However when I got my quote I explained what had happened and the insurance company said they would charge me the non-fault price and then if it wasn't settled in my favour then I would have to pay the difference.

Seemed a bit backward to me at the time but as the third party had fully admitted liability I took them up on the offer.
