how legal is it for Post Office staff to refuse to serve ppl on mobies?

If you approach the counter and get a call and have to answer, a quick, " I'll call you back I'm in a shop" wouldn't offend anybody. If your on the phone, it's going to take longer to communicate with you and therefore keep other people waiting, so it's in the interests of other customers and good customer service, plus it's blimmin rude.0

I work in retail and it really annoys me when customers come to the till talking on their mobile, or answer it when I am serving them. Most customers pay by card and I have to interrupt and ask them to put their pin number in. If I was in the queue behind them I would not be happy either. The store telephone often rings and is situated on the counter at till, I would not answer this as long as I had a customer at the till. I am sure they would grumble if I did.0

i do hate these people.. even when its not at a till.
i was at tesco yesterday and a women was on her phone at the self service till, she slowly scanned everything single handedly, and placed them in the bagging area BUT NOT IN BAGS! when she was done and eventually paid, she hung around to have more of her conversation, and then started slowly packing up whilst still on the phone.
i was so close to saying to her excuse me but people are still waiting!
do one or the other - not both!0 -

I've seen people do that. They probably think it's ok as they're not having to communicate with anyone, they don't think about the fact it's taking longer and people are waiting.
It's not just mobiles that are the problem though, just people talking in general.
Went to the basket only till in tesco the other day in an attempt to get out faster and the couple in front of me decided to just keep chatting with the person on the till. The person on the till ignored me, the couple paid no attention to me and I ended up standing there ages waiting for them to finish. I don't care if they know them, I don't care if they talk while packing/paying but after that just leave. If they'd been on the phone at least the person on the till could have ignored them, served me and I could have just walked around them.
Also nearly got knocked out the day as some guy decided to stand right behind me and talk to someone. I turned around on the spot and his elbow was millimetres from my face. Neither him or the woman he was talking to even noticed me despite the fact I'm sure I said something out loud in surprise when I turned to find him there. If he'd been on his phone he might have kept walking.
So much as I agree with not being served if you're on the phone, I do think that shops just need to tape certain peoples mouths when they go in to stop any type of communication and only allow them to remove it to answer a question at the till or when they've left the shop

Superb Idea! :T
Only yesterday, I was stuck in a PO queue and one reason it wasn't moving was that a woman being served at one of only two tills was on her mobile, so she could not hear the postmistress behind the glass screen.
The other reason the queue was static was because the same woman additionally couldn't hear the postmistress, due to her toddler screaming to attempt to gain the attention. However, apparently the woman thought the phone call more important. [It was loud enough that it meant the customer at the other till had problems hearing the other member of staff].
The transaction took 4 or 5 times as long as it should have - and it's not the first time. I'm certainly going to suggest the same policy at my local post office!

...If you can fake that, you've got it made."

I just do not know what goes through some peoples heads?
Why do think that it is necessary to pick up every call as soon as it comes through? Why do they think that normal members of the public want to hear a full blown one sided conversation? Some of which can be explicit to say the least. Do they not know we can all hear ( even if we do not want to )
Do they think that it makes them look important? Powerful? Masterful?
Do they think it is cool???
No it just makes them look disrespectful, rude and ignorant.
If I dealt with the public I would take a leaf out of the PO book and do the same.Happiness, Health and Wealth in that order please!:A0 -
Great idea! They should do this in supermarkets at the tills!0

Against what right?onetwothree123 wrote: »I felt it was against peoples rights , what next, don't have headphones on? Unscrew a wooden leg? Leave the buggy outside ?
Do you even know what the human rights are? Cause I don't, and this isn't against any right.
If you are desperate to be talking to someone while trying to be served at any sort of retail outlet then that's just rude in my opinion.
I am sure your conversation (on the phone) can wait and if it can't, the post office isn't going anywhere either!0 -
I would like to see these signs in other shops, too. The Post Office queue is slow enough as it is, without having to wait for someone to finish their mobile phone conversation! The report button is for abusive posts, not because you don't like someone, or their opinions0
