Moving from BT to Sky

My BT landline is paid until October 26th and after a discussion , tonight, I'm almost certainly going over to Sky (with bb going from O2).
BT said they need 30 days' notice, but the Sky rep said I will not need to give them notice, as Sky will sort things, including giving me a credit to cover any line rental lost to BT. She said that if I cancel with BT , I will lose my present number, which I want to keep.
From people's experience, do I need to contact BT ? (I will have to cancel my free evenings and weekend though or they will charge £3.50 from as my freebie runs with renewal of line rental, unless I telthem otherwise within 10 days)

I don't think Sky person is being truthful a contract is a contract and it is likely that you will have to wait, fair enough Sky may credit you with any charges with BT but that doesn't override the problem that you have to see out your contact with BT. Simply go ahead but you will have to wait 30 days or whatever to move. My understanding is that in some cases you may lose your landline number if it is exlusive to BT but this isn't very often and you should be able to keep it,0

Why is the Sky rep untruthful ? She only said that Sky will deal with the notice and that it's very unlikely that I will not be able to keep my number, if sky does the approach, but I could well lose it if I contact BT who will shut me down.
I just need reassuring that Sky can sort the transfer, without my having to call BT.0 -

Correct - leave it to Sky. Do not contact BT and cancel your contract or you will lose your number and your service.
If you let Sky do the transfer you won't lose your current phone number. You don't need to contact BT - Sky will do it all for you assuming they are taking over the line.
You may as we'll wait until your current BT contract expires.0 -
Having spoken to another BT call centre person, today, I've been told that if a new provider takes my line before October 26th(to which I've paid up) there will be no penalty to pay ( I do understand that I money paid on linesaver will not be refunded). is this correct ?
Also, if, for some reason, the new provider doesn't take over until a few days after October 26th,would BT bill me for a whole month or just per day at the full rate ?
I would appreciate a BT rep's answering my questions, so all is clear and in print.0
