MOT Q - are Failures instantly logged on the new computerised system?

Before, I am flamed for this question, I want to stress I am not condoning anyone driving a non-MOT'd car!

With the new computer logged MOTs just wondered if the failure is instantly shown on the system, even if the car still has a valid ticket from last year. If the car's current MOT expires in a couple of week's time, but it failed test today for instance, would police ANPR etc flag it as a failure, or does it only show up as not having a valid MOT AFTER the current MOT cert ends?

Having a debate with hubby about it, and wanted to know who is right?

This quetion comes up a lot on other car and MOT user forums i'm on.

If you put your car in for an MOT before the current MOT has expired and it fails, the current MOT is still valid until the expiry date.
It won't show on any of the police's automated systems either so no problem there.

Depending on the reason for the MOT fail though you could still be prosecuted for driving an unsafe vehicle.

You current MOT is still valid up to it's expiry date - regardless of any failure at the moment.

You are perfectly entitled to drive it until then.

Of course if it's a missing bulb or some such thing then you are committing an offence anyway - even a day after passing a test

I'm assuming you are going to get it fixed asap though.

I see Retrogamer beat me to it LOL.

Thanks, so hubby is right, not me ;)

He is taking his mum's in next week. If it fails, even if he does the work same day, he won't be able to take it back for a retest until the following week - his next day off. Just wondering if she would be able to drive it between him doing the work and getting it retested. So you have answered that question that PC Plod isn't likely to pull her over as her current MOT won't expire until end of Oct.

Is this a motoring section first?

The "failed MOT before the old one expires" question was asked, answered correctly and acknowledged by the OP before a single inaccurate urban myth post found its way into the thread!

I think I have to go lie down for a bit! :D

Not one person mentioned the insurance being invalid either;)

  • If it fails don't drive it. Your insurance will be invalid, you will go to jail and baby seals will die.

...which, of course, would apply even if you hadn't taken it in for the test which it failed...

It says a lot that this post has got more thanks for being useful than the two right answers to the question! :D
What if there was no such thing as a rhetorical question?
