Littlewoods (shop direct) incorrectly putting unpaid mark on my credit history

I've just checked my credit report, which is perfect, other than an incorrect unpaid mark from littlewoods from two years ago. I paid for some curtains, which never turned up, so I called them and they said they were out of stock and couldn't tell me when they'd be back in stock, so I cancelled the order. Now, two years later, I see they've put two months' of unpaid notifications on my account! I've emailed them to complain and demand that they remove it immediately. I can provide them with the address I was at when the order was made, my name, bank account, date of birth, phone numbers etc, but they refuse to communicate with me because they say that the email address I've used to contact them is not the one they have on file.

I've forwarded the conversation to my previous two email addresses at hotmail and yahoo (email addresses I've not used for two years) and emailed them from these old addresses. Now they're not responding. All they'll tell me is that I have to send a letter!

I've pointed out that that is ridiculous, as I can't provide any more or less information by letter as I can by phone or email, all they're doing is slowing down the process and stopping me from being able to sort out their mistake quickly but they're refusing to help.

What else can I do?

One thing a letter would show that a phone call or email won't is a signature.

You could approach the credit reference agency and seek their assistance, but as you would have to start again with all the explaining, I imagine it will be much simpler just to write that letter.

There is advice in MSE's Credit Score guide about how to put these things right.
