I am a 24 year old male. I have a degree in economics from Imperial College. I speak English and in university I also learned Chinese. I am from Sunderland which is where I currently live. There are few jobs here and I will soon move. I have savings of £8,000 to pay for rent, transport etc in the short term. The destination I have set my sights on is Aberdeen. According to thisismoney.co.uk, there are 42 jobseekers per job vacancy in Sunderland, and 0.4 jobseekers per job vacancy in Aberdeen. I already have a small apartment lined up in the outskirts of Aberdeen and I will drive up in my car. When I get there I will sign on and search for a job. Ideally I would like a job that uses my degree.
So basically I am packing my bags and searching for new opportunities. This is new to me and I'm wondering if anyone here has done anything like this before, anything I've forgotten about, any advice or tips, etc.
Why not apply for jobs there BEFORE you move as its not the number of jobseekers you want to look at but the types of jobs available there. We’ve had to remove your signature. I could, but I'm moving in less than 10 days so I thought I'd just do it when I'm actually there.
The ratio of jobseekers to job vacancies is not a perfect measure but it is a good indicator of a region's economy. We’ve had to remove your signature. Please check the Forum Rules if you’re unsure why it’s been removed and, if still unsure, email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
I'd be very interested in how things go, I've often thought about moving to Edinburgh for new opportunities, although I've recently got a job locally, which was a surprise, as my regions unemployment is way above average. But it's still something I will consider for the future.
Will you be claiming housing benefit? You might want to check with the landlord that they accept tenants who are unemployed.0 -
Oh, now this is the kind of thing I haven't thought about.. showing my lack of research thus far.
Worst case scenario I'll sleep in my car until I can get a place.
Did you think about this at all?
How many homeless in Aberdeen , do you know? We’ve had to remove your signature. Please check the Forum Rules if you’re unsure why it’s been removed and, if still unsure, email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
You do know that you'll only get the shared accommodation rate of LHA, don't you? In Aberdeen that's just under £70pw, anything else you'll have to pay out of your own money.0

Yes, thanks. I have savings of £8,000.
If the landlord doesn't allow unemployed people to stay there, and if I can't find anywhere else, and if there are no cheap hotels around.. then yes, car it will be!
That in itself will impact on any means tested benefits you claim - expect the rates for JSA/LHA/CT to be reduced.0 -

Yes, thanks for the tip.
Off savings of £8,000, assuming my net spend (i.e. the money spent minus benefits income) is around £600/mo (is that reasonable? I have no idea), then 8000/600 = 13 months I should theoretically be able to survive for, without a job.
Sounds like you have really thought this through!0 -
Okay........ I live in Aberdeen! The employment situation is very good up here and you could quickly pick up some sort of national minimum wage job quite easily but not guaranteed in your proposed line of work. The main problem is cost of living is VERY high up here. Do not expect to find ANY cheap accommodation to rent as oil workers use them between stints offshore. There are NO cheap hotels - oil week had visitors being sent to Dundee! School teachers were in short supply due to the cost of living so the council had to introduce golden hellos to get people to move here and to help with accommodation. Aspc.co.uk should be a good resource to look for rented flats - any cheapish ones are in grotty areas so your 8k is not going to last as long as you think. Having said that Aberdeen is a great place to live but be prepared for hard winters and long dark days. Pm me if I can help!0
