self funded training course

Morning all.

I am looking into self funding a health and safety course.

My contract of employment states that I have responsibility regarding H+S atthe unit I work in.

I have asked the company to provide training for this but they are unwilling.

I still want to increase my skill set in this area so am looking into ways ofdoing this course (£3800 course cost).

Would I be able to claim back the cost of the course against my tax? On the principlethat this expense would be incurred in order for me to full fill the job description?

any advice ?
thanks all

  • Unfortunately not. As an employee the expense has to be wholly, necessarily and exclusively incurred in the performance of your duty. While it would be of assistance in increasing your skills, your employer has not made it a condition that you take the course and incur the expenditure - you will be retained with or without the qualification.

Should the course result in you being able to join a particular professional body, any subcriptions to such a body would be allowable provided they appear on the HMRC approved list.

  • As you are in a master and servant relationship, ask your master to re-pay the costs (provided you gain the qualification).
When your master refuses, you will be able to evaluate your perceived worth to the organisation.
  • If you were self employed through your own LTD company, (technically an employee, not self employed,) this would be a business cost, so before tax and NI is taken off.

So it would be better if your company paid the cost, and reduced your salary by that ammount.
  • as a wage slave i am well aware of how valued i am to the company i work for .Which have recently got their IIP status .What a crock .End of the day the tax man needs to understand that if you spend money to progress your skills you should be able to off set it against the tax you pay .Ultimately you'll earn more and pay more in tax .
well best get my knee pads on and start groveling

presumably what you really mean, is that we should all pay more taxes so that companies can avoid their responsibilities to train their own staff adequately?
