In a dilemma on how honest I should be on application forms / CV's?

Hello everyone,

I am job hunting at the moment and maybe like others, on some applications I am not even hearing a "Thanks but no thanks!" :( So I am looking for ideas to present myself better. I have a few obstacles as I have quite a chequered job history as I have been a forces wife for the last 18 years and whilst I have always worked in some form, its quite a mixture due to having not been in the same place for a great length of time!

I am studying for a degree at the moment with the OU and I am wondering if I should be putting that on my application form / CV in some way? I am in year 2 and doing really well and some of the modules are related to the jobs I am going for but someone mentioned that the employer may think I will be 'gone' as soon as I get my degree but on the other hand I need all the help I can get when applying! :o

  • Your cv should be changing each application, so if the degree supports the job role that you are applying for, them add it in.

For applications you need to make sure each essential skill is addressed, and all desirables are mentioned. Make sure the box ticker can tick all the boxes and that's what gets you on the interview list.

You should always do each and every CV to suit the job and company you are going for. However, you should always tell the truth. By all means dress up what you've got, but never lie.

I have reported people who I employed when it turns out that they have lied. The offence is deception by attempting to gain pecunary advantage. Upon conviction, you can get 10 years in Prison.

I'm smelling a lot of bull in your post, I guess IDS is now in prison for all his lies on his CV?

Do you have any idea of the percentage of people with lies on their CVs? We would have to build hundreds of more prisons to house them if you bull was true

Go and do it then if you are that confident. Also, do try and come back with something far, far wittier than being crude.

Millions? You shouldn't post this late if it does that to you.

As for IDS, please give me the proof. I will report him myself.

The investigation into the Conservative Party leader's education and early career - broadcast at 10.30pm on BBC TWO last night (Wednesday 18 December 2002) - was presented by Michael Crick, author of the best-selling biography of Jeffrey Archer. The University of Perugia

Iain Duncan Smith's biography on the Conservative Party website, his entry in Who's Who, and various other places, state that he went to the Universita di Perugia in Italy.

This is not true: his office now admit that he went to the Universita per Stranieri, which is also in Perugia.

The Universita per Stranieri - or University for Foreigners - was founded in 1921 and is a totally separate institution to the medieval Universita di Perugia, founded by the Pope in 1308.

Although the Universita per Stranieri is a respected language school, it did not grant degrees when he studied there in 1973, although some students attained diplomas.

Mr Duncan Smith's office has now admitted to Newsnight that he didn't get any qualifications in Perugia or even finish his exams.

    Dunchurch College of Management

The first line of Iain Duncan Smith's biography, on the Conservative Party website, claims he was "educated at Dunchurch College of Management".

In fact, Dunchurch was the former staff college for GEC Marconi, for whom he worked in the 1980s.

Mr Duncan Smith's office has now confirmed to Newsnight that he did not get any qualifications there either, but that he completed six separate courses lasting a few days each, adding up to about a month in total.

Newsnight has now spoken to 19 former tutors at Dunchurch. Most agree it is over-emphasising his experience at Dunchurch to describe it in the way he does.

John Garside, a former Dunchurch tutor, says: "I'm puzzled, flattered, but puzzled. What we did was offer short courses... it was not a continuous form of education by any means."

Newsnight has shown these details to some of Iain Duncan Smith's constituents in Chingford.

Several people assumed he must have been at both the University of Perugia and Dunchurch for several years, and obtained qualifications in either or both places. ''

Come on Brassedoff, I've given you the proof that IDS lied on his CV.

    You've reported him now?

He'll be serving his 10 years in prison from tomorrow?

Back to the original subject, if you lie on a CV to get a job, you commit a crime. Whether the employer chooses to pursue it, or whether the Police deal with it in a different term is all in the if's, but's and maybes.

Resorting to insults just proves how much you have lost this discussion. READ THE PROOF!! His office even admits his CV has lies in it.

Why haven't you reported IDS like you said you would if he lied in his CV?
