Council Tax Help!!

Hi,

I currently live in a 2 bedroom flat in Barnsley, South Yorkshire and i moved in last September/October after buying it in May (was decorating etc).

I got letters from the local council saying i had to set up a direct debit for my payments i did this about 5-6 times and they said they never received the letters.

I contacted them several times and paid it over the phone and then tried setting up direct debits even though they should have already done it, but yet still not setup.

Around February/March this year i received a letter saying i must pay £700+ for the year that i have had my property i had owned it, i had only owned it 9 month and been living in around 6, i was told that i didnt have to pay if no one was living in the house/flat or if i was decorating it.

With the threat of Bailifs i paid the amount stated and every month from then i have paid £78 by going online and paying it because everytime i set up a direct debit they say none as ever been set up.

They have now sent me a final warning saying that i have lost the rights to pay monthly installments and must pay £480 plus £78 court costs. I missed last months payments as i was working away and then i went on holiday and was nowhere near a pc.

This will work out around £1500 Council Tax for living a 2 bedroomed flat in Barnsley for less than a year of living in it.

They also stated that because the flat had not been lived in for 6 months prior to me buying it is why i had to pay the full tax for the first year, also without the 25% discount of living on my own.

Can anyone give me some advice on this please?

:(:(:(

Work out what you should need to pay.
Kiss goodbye to the empty unfurnished discount as that was used up be previous owner. It relates to property not person.
So full CT for the empty period (unless this is your second home there may be a discount depending on council). 75% full CT for the period you lived there alone.
Then phone up Council and offer to settle account in full and ask if they will waive court fees if you do so.
