in Cutting tax
I think (know) I am paying too much tax, I have three jobs, one is a temporary casual job that I do for maybe 8 weeks a year. One I work once a week, and the other my main job is through an agency. I am being basic rate taxed on all jobs, but I obviously shouldn't be, when I ring the tax office, how do I approach it, last time I spoke to someone about this was five years ago when I also had three jobs in that tax year not at the same time, and he was quite abrupt about the complications of the various jobs that I had, saying how often did I work for them and such!
Btw the the reason I have that amount of jobs is that I don't always do my main agency job, so the other jobs tide me over when I don't work for the agency, but I am being crippled by tax which negates doing them...

HMRC staff sometimes forget they are civil servants, especially if you are not savvy to their ways, you were lucky, they can be [STRIKE]bl dy [/STRIKE]very rude.I think (know) I am paying too much tax, I have three jobs, one is a temporary casual job that I do for maybe 8 weeks a year. There are NO insurmountable obstacles, and it is very easy if your major job will pay you more than £9,440 in the tax year to 5 April 2014. In this case you TELL HMRC to give you all your allowances against this job and the others are BR.
If you have no job which will pay you more than £9,440 in the tax year you have to estimate and divide this amount between two (preferably) or three jobs.
Your estimate may be wrong but you can change it at anytime during the year but best before February. At the end of the tax year check that you have paid tax in all of your jobs, if not send your P60s to HMRC for a refund. The only thing that is constant is change.0 -
When you say your are basic rate taxed do you mean that all three jobs have a BR tax code and that you are paying 20% tax on the earnings from all of them? if so then do what zygurat says. But it seems strange that you would not have a proper tax code on at least one of the jobs. Did you give the agency a P45 or fill in a P46 when you started there?0

Thank you both, ill ring them tomorrow and do as you said. Agrinnall I did when I joined but that was four years ago now, and I've been part of a few agencies, I now am only in one agency, so I suspect the hmrc are confused, ill ring and put them right tomorrow!
