What is the best way to go? Small pension on ESA

Hi

I have a small pension due in Jan 2014 when I am 60. It is worth 14.5k. I am on ESA with quite bad health. Heart disease, arthritis, spine crumbling and other bits and pieces. Can anyone advise the best way to go with this and how it would affect my benefit payments?

Many thanks

Mike

Are you on Income or Contribution Based ESA? because the rules on Pension income are different.....also if you migrated onto ESA (ie from IB) it could be different again.

And are you in WRAG or Support Group.

Edit: You might get more replies if this was posted this question on the 'Benefit & Tax Credits' Forum; there are lots of questions relating to ESA on there.

I have a small pension due in Jan 2014 when I am 60. It is worth 14.5k.

If due and payable at that date, whether you take it or not, it could be counted as income (actual or notional)? http://www.dwp.gov.uk/docs/dmgch85.pdf (85401)

It would be wise to check your personal situation with a Benefits Adviser at CAB?
  • Thanks for the replys. I was migrated to ESA and am on contributions based ESA. I am in neither WRAG or a Support Group at the moment but that will change possibly next year

If you're on Contribution Based ESA and you get a Private Pension, then for every £ over £85 per week, you'll loose 50p of your ESA; however I think that if you migrated onto ESA its the rules from what you migrated from that apply (but not 100% sure, since I didn't migrated).

But you'll be best asking on the "Benefits & Tax Credits" area of this site, the likes of 'RogerBlack' who posts on that Forum knows a lot more about the rules of ESA than I do.

I've been looking on the DirectGov website for you, but its changed and a lot of useful info that used to be on there has now gone (like the pension deduction amount), all I can find now is http://dwp.gov.uk/docs/dwp015.pdf but IMHO is very basic, but I'll keep looking.
