Going self-employed? Rental Earnings?

Hi all
like a lot of unemployed people I am going to start writing articles for the likes of hubpages (prob for a pittance!) so as to at least get a bit of income coming in. Will be registering as self-employed with HMRC as soon as the first article is about to go live. My query is the following: have just had tenants move into my old house. Do the earnings from this rental income, despite going into the Land and Property section of the tax return, count towards the £5,725 allowance for self-employed people? Knowing this answer will dictate how I register for NI contributions at this stage (although I might do it voluntarily anyway as I have had long periods out of work in the past).
many thanks!

No it doesn't for NI but does for taxLife is not the way it’s supposed to be. It’s the way it is. The way you cope with it is what makes the difference.0
