Once I had an item with 46 watchers, no-one had bid at all, so I added a note to the auction saying 'this item has 46 watchers, if you are really interersted, you might want to get your bid in now' It worked well.
A minute at the till, a lifetime on the bill.

Nothing tastes as good as being slim feels.

    one life, live it!

Has it been working recently? I gave up on it a few months back when it would not place any bids for me. There was loads of discussion in the forums about it, but I'm not sure if it was ever 100% fixed.

Goofbay used to also have a tool where you could see the number of watchers, but eBay closed the door on that one

..and wait ...then kaboom in goes your snipe ...Only to find someone else has set theirs software at 2 seconds and they've won the item ....
They won not by bidding later than you, but by bidding higher than you.

If you had both bid the same, your earlier bid would have taken preference.

I always snipe, usually manually about 5-8 seconds before the end. Sometimes I use Goofbay if I know I will be away from my PC.

Bid once. Bid your maximum. Bid late.
