Buddleia

Can anyone tell me how far apart i should plant buddleia bushes

  • Mine are planted about 10 feet apart, I cut them back at the end of the season and they come back bigger and better every season. They look lovely with the flowers, butterflies and bumble bees on them

Does depend on variety. There are a few small ones (Peacock, Marbled White, Purple Emperor... others all named after flutterbyes) that can be planted a couple of feet apart. The medium sized ones like Royal Red, Harlequin, Black Knight, they need 5 feet, then the biggies like yellow globe and white profusion need most - I'd squeeze them at 8 feet.

    Miles apart for me!!

Had one growing in a chimney port - devil of a job (and expensive ) to get yid of!
A quick gaze down the street where I lived then, and many houses seemed to have similar problems.
I used to work for Tesco - now retired - speciality Clubcard

:rotfl: Yes, they can be a total menace because they self-seed so easily.

It really does depend on the variety, OP, but do bear in mind they can become as bad as weeds if they're happy.

Have you ever known one unhappy? :D

While they are a feature of waste ground, railway embankments and un-maintained buildings, I've grown buddleias for many years and not had any real issues as a result. There are at least two dozen species in my present garden that are far more of a self-seeding nightmare.

I love them too, I know they are common and grow everywhere but it's lovely to watch all the bees and butterflies. I'd like more!
