Does starting work ever get better?

Ive been working with a company for 5 weeks now and already the thought of going back there after my day off is making me cry. I feel like there is little support from anyone, half of the managers are useless, hard to find computers. The last straw for me is that ive now been told i wont be getting a half day off to go to a hospital appointment because i applied to late and there was never any chance i would get it off. I had to spend time chasing different managers as i had no shifts up to even know what to apply for to take a half day off, then when one did get my shifts up they told me to apply for the half day and to phone in my day off to check.

Called to check and find out they should have checked the holidays then and nothing they can do as they will not give me the time to go so i have had to cancel it now. I have mental health issues and since starting working there i can feel myself go downhill, hence why i really needed to go see my psychologist next week but now I'm going to have to wait another few weeks.

I feel like i should talk to my own manager about everything but seeing as she's on holiday and going by half the other managers attitudes i feel to scared to as well. Im not sure what to do now as i'm dreading going back there tomorrow as I'm now working the next seven days in a row and even thinking about it makes me cry.

Not really...if it isn't working out then leave. It sounds awful to me...but is leaving an option can you support yourself? You may need to go to your GP and explain the problem and they might sign you off sick indefinitely enabling you to quit and go onto JSA straight away.

  • yup..agree with happyMJ..if a something isn't working well for you then its better to leave from there..
  • I know leaving would be the sensible option but its not the most practical either so i feel stuck.

Look for another job and then leave when (if) you get one.

Could you clarify what you mean by "hard to find computers".
  • I work in a call centre so we don't have seats allocated to us, if you go in on the later shifts then most of the computers have been taken and some of them dont work, so some people have had no option but to sit down in another department which is not good if you are new and need to be where the support is. We where told that people usually sit in with their team but with my manager being off all the temps have been sitting there so its a case of find your own seat somewhere.

The last two days have not been too bad but speaking to some other people today Im not the only one who is struggling with the job but Im hoping my manager will be back soon so at least i can try and discuss my concerns. I guess the thing is the job is okay in itself but i guess the issue is more with the company and how things are run and the support they provide to new staff.

That sucks, not having your own desk. If you have your own space, you can get it how you want, with everything in the right place, so it does make you feel more at home

It can be really difficult starting somewhere new, especially if you feel you aren't getting any support.

I know it's not much help, but it can take months to settle down.

It's good that you are talking to others, and you know it's not just you who's struggling, and it gives you a bond with others, so that's a positive.

Yes, do speak to your manager and see if there is anything that can be done to improve the situation, and be prepared to make suggestions for improvement.

Give it a few more months at least, but if it's still not feeling right, then it'd be the it be time to start looking around for something else.
