Hi...just wondering if anyone knows if you can study for nvq's for care for the elderly in college? or whether you have to be in an actual care job to be trained? Whenever i find a post in a rest home they ask if i have nvq's?

You need practical work experience to achieve NVQs in any subject. You either need to find an organisation to put you through NVQs whilst working(not usually difficult as there's such a turnover of staff) or you need to do some voluntary work alongside your college course (again, not hard to organise). If you don't already have a level 2 qualification, you shouldn't have to pay college fees because of something called the "Level 2 entitlement".0

Hi I have got my level 3 in caring and the majority of people do it whilst they are working. It is now law for care homes to have a percentage of their staff to either be working towards one or to have completed their NVQ. So you will find some employers will pay for you or as oldernotwiser says you may be entitled to do it free0

I,ve Found From My Years Working In Care Some Employers Now Put A Clause If They Pay For You To Do Nvq That If U Leave Within A Certain Time You Pay Back Some Of Cost
As Some People Have Came Got The Company Pay For Nvq Then Done Runner To Somewhere Else
Also Having Nvq Gives U Better Chance Of At Least Getting Interview And Slightly Better Hourly Rate

And the answer to do you have an NVQ is "Not yet, but I'm very keen to obtain one and have been making enquiries at local colleges about how to start one." Make sure it's true ...Signature removed for peace of mind0
