Help- Manager issues

Hi,

Long time lurker first time poster...

I have been in my new job for 10 weeks after securing a promotion so was really excited about starting in a new company and new role.

However the last 10 weeks have been a nightmare, my new Manager started out ok with me but within a week had started to talk to me like a piece of s''£ in front of team members, she provides half a briefing on jobs/contracts and when I ask questions refuses to provide more information. She has undermined me in front of clients and people in my team to the point where some members of a different team have looked up and expressed shock at the way she talks to me!

I've tried raising the issues with her but she doesn't seem to care or makes such a big issues about me asking for help that I don't feel I can approach her any more....

I don't want to go down a formal grievance route but struggling with what to do, as this is seriously starting to affect my mental health and is chipping away at my confidence as nothing I do is good enough despite doing a similar role for my previous employer for 5 years..

Do you think asking for an informal chat with our respective head of department is the best way forward..... I'm not planning on using the Harassment or Bullying line, just want to to see if I could move teams?

I'm not sure how long I can take this and what should be a challenging and exciting time is turning into a nightmare!

    Is this a new job? You say promotion but it sounds like you have a new job with a new employer. Not much I can say to help sometimes things don't work out and one of your options is to walk. If you did switch teams the fact you couldn't get on with your previous line manager will always be on your "record" and you may not be considered for further promotion for quite a while. Personally I'd quit and move on in another company or put up with it and considering the potential risks to your health I wouldn't.

    Well done on the promotion! You were good enough to move on up so don't feel crap in the job just yet and make a rash decision to quit.

    If it were me I would read through my jd throughly and ensure I am doing exactly what it states to the best of my ability. It's always tough starting out in a new place trying to make your mark but be confident in your ability, you were given the job for a reason - because you were seen as the best.

    Have you sussed out the strongest in the office yet? Usually the one who knows the score, has usually been there for donkeys and knows how the systems/people work etc etc. This person is your new best friend from now on even if you are their manager - get to know them - they might know more than your own manager when it comes to answering your queries rather than having to bother the boss several times a day. If you have to speak to the boss can you do it by email rather than face to face? (written confirmation that you asked for further advice if things go wrong)

    Oh and I'd wait before running to the head of department for now, 10 weeks in and complaining about your manager could make you look weak and a trouble maker who can't handle the pressure of the role.

    If you still feel this manager has got it in for you everytime she claps eyes on you then start to make a diary of dates, times, comments made and any witnesses of the unprofessional behaviour, at least you will have some proof to back up your claims.

    Happy, thanks for the reply, it is a new job with a new employer but its a promotion as well within my career path.

    I don't want to walk, I had turned down another role to take this one as it is a dream job, large reputable organisation, closer to home (it's cut my commute in half) just this one individual is making my life a misery and really struggling mentally to rise above this as dreading going into work each day now.

    I've had a few discussions with the office "oracle" for advice and guidance on issues and he let slip I wasn't the first person to be experiencing issues with this particular manager and just left it at that so i'm not sure what to make of that now...

    Just when life is good and everything is starting to settle this happens.... :-(
