My 17p toilet roll road (trip) to success

Hi all, this is a thread to discuss the MSE blog:
My 17p toilet roll road (trip) to success

"Whenever I tell anyone we’re going on a 24-hour road trip to visit family in Poland, I always encounter the same confused look and the same question: "Why not get a plane?"..."

    It's great driving to Greece
I rode a motorbike there and back in 1987, one of the best holidays I've ever had.

All road trips are great - FACT :)

Did you drive all the way or take the ferry from Italy?

Down through Italy then a ferry from ????

I suspect it would have caused a few issues with borders back then going round but I seem to recall our main concern was too many different currencies to juggle

I've driven to Italy before, lovely drive and a German road trip.

However, I've been pricing up a holiday to Italy for next year, we were all set on the idea of driving but the costs were just too high compared to flying, we're talking £600 more, it's just not worth it anymore.

It's not generally and I fly more often than not these days
But we do go to the Alps cycling most years and the cost of flying all the bikes and kit as hold luggage is horrendous so driving is way cheaper for a lot of trips other than beach or city type holidays.

The article got me thinking about what I buy and where. My husband works for an airline so I don't tend to drive to places abroad. However I did buy the most fantastic pair of cold-weather walking boots for the snow, a very good winter jacket and a pair of walking poles for icy weather in Florida of all places. They were way cheaper than here.

Many aren't as time rich as the blogger.

Driving for ski trips is quite popular for those in the south east who can get to the Chunnel easily.

It'd be great to have an MSE Total Holiday Cost Calculator, which suggests opportunities such as 17p loo roll and contributions to the spending money budget such as I won't be doing Orange Wednesday pizza night because I'll be away.

Of course Travel Supermarket affiliate links would be the incentive for MSE to do this.

I've drove as far as Spain, but they wouldn't let us in.
We were camping in France and decided on the spur of the moment to go a bit further. But in those days you needed Green Card insurance there, France didn't need it so we hadn't bothered.

Spain used to require a bail bond too, if I remember correctly.
