Best way to pay for tax underpayment

This is perhaps not exactly what this forum section is for but it seems closest to the question I have. Apparently I've underpaid my tax for the year, although my situation is very straight forward (temp working for agency longterm, no change in pay or tax code, nothing bar standard pay, single job etc.) it's taken some time to get to the bottom of it which has left me very little time to make the payment as it has to be received by the 6th July.

So I'm wondering what the best way to make the payment is, the only options I seem to have according to the letter is either personal cheque, banker's draft or postal order. I don't have a cheque book (although apparently I should be able to get a one of cheque if I go into my bank), I'm not keen on a banker's draft and I'm not familiar with postal orders.

I've looked online as the slip advises but while it mentions making electronic payments, as far as I can tell I can't used that for paying the underpayment? I'm just wondering what the quickest and most reliable way is to get this sorted? Also how strict is the deadline if for some reason the payment does go missing in the post or the system?

Thanks,
John

  • PAYE does not accept electronic payments. However depending on which year the underpayment arose you may be able to pay it back via your tax code if you are still working and earning enough.

If you cannot afford to pay as a lump sum you can phone HMRC and see if they can set up direct debit to spread the amount over a longer period.

Sorry I don't know what happens if you don't pay by the deadline

]I'm sure I've paid tax bills electronically - but you need the right sort code/account number and the right format for your tax reference. It should be somewhere on the HMRC site.

A one off cheque from your bank will be cheaper than a bankers draft or postal order, both of which are expensive.

And I think (with the right paying in slip) you can pay it in cash at a Post Office. I could be out of date on that though.
